Kirby Sentria Vacuum Cleaner

The Kirby Sentria is the latest vacuum cleaner by Kirby on the market. Previous models include the Sanitronic, Classic, Classic Omega, Tradition, Heritage, Legend, Generation 3, 4 ,5 ,6 and Kirby Ultimate G / Diamond ranges.. So if you are looking to buy a Sentria, what are the benifits this new vacuum has over the old Kirby models?

The Kirby Sentria is a major investment, and some new owners are baffled by the numerous attachments and the unique way that Kirby vacuums are designed. Once you get acquainted with the procedures for using it to vacuum different surfaces you will appreciate its power and flexibility. Use it as an upright or as a canister vacuum depending on your vacuuming needs, or use the optional shampoo system to shampoo your carpet. Being made of nearly all die cast aluminum, it may last longer than plastic vacuums but it also makes it heavy for carrying up stairs.

Basic Information

Your Sentria owner's manual provides detailed instructions on procedures such as attaching the vacuum bag, removing and reattaching the power nozzle, and replacing the belt and bag. Take note on the information about the power nozzle, as you will be frequently removing and reattaching it as you use the Sentria in different modes and for storage. One way to remember which way to turn the handle on the belt lifter is to always turn it toward the colored arrow that is currently lined up. When the nozzle is attached and the belt is engaged, the green arrows line up. When removing the nozzle or using the unit without the brush, turn the handle counter clockwise until the red arrows line up. When reattaching the nozzle, turn the handle clockwise until the green arrows line up.

Using The Kirby As A Upright Vacuum Cleaner

You can use the Kirby Sentria cleaner as an upright vacuum for vacuuming large areas of carpet or floor. The power nozzle should be engaged, though you can choose to leave the belt and brush disengaged to use suction only. The nozzle can be adjusted for floor or different carpet heights. Use the large pedal on the left rear of the unit to raise the nozzle, move the unit to the area you wish to clean, and then use the small pedal to lower the nozzle to the correct height for cleaning. When you hear an increase in buzzing from the unit, you have reached the right level. Always raise the unit to the highest level when removing and attaching the power nozzle or the shampoo system. If you have trouble moving the Sentria on carpet, engage the tech drive power assist feature by pressing down the D pedal. This makes the unit easy to move with minimal effort. To move the unit while it is turned off, press the N pedal to disengage the tech drive.

Using The Kirby As A Canister Vacuum Cleaner

The Sentria owner manual lists 19 attachments that work with the unit for performing a range of cleaning tasks. To use an attachment, switch the unit from upright to canister mode by removing the power nozzle and attaching the attachment hose, the long flexible hose that connects to the unit the same way as the nozzle. You can use most of the end attachments with or without the extension tubes. The Zippbrush is particularly useful for removing pet fur from upholstery, and is also helpful for cleaning carpeted stairs. The upholstery nozzle and the wall and ceiling Brush give users the best tool for those surfaces, and the crevice tool can reach into narrow places such as under sofas and in tight corners.

Using The Kirby As A Carpet Shampooer

The Kirby Sentria also works with the optional carpet shampoo system. Before using it, vacuum the area to be shampooed. You can use the Kirby brand shampoo that comes with the unit, or any carpet shampoo you prefer. Fill the water tank with water and shampoo before attaching it to the unit. Watch the tray as you work so it does not become overfull and slosh onto the carpet, and empty it when necessary. Vacuum the carpet again after it has dried.
